GRACIE - CUTE!This is our sweetheart Gracie (Standard Poodle).  Her nose is always super wet and cold as an ice cube.  We know all too well!

BEEF AND BARLEY BISCUITS Mmm!
These have NO wheat, corn or oats. The only cereal grains are barley and rye, which most dogs aren't allergic to.
Recipe source: Ultimate Dog Treat Cookbook by Liz Palika

Ingredients. . .
2 C Barley Flour
1 C Rye Flour
1/2 C low-sodium beef bouillon powder
1/2 C crumbled or shredded cooked beef (such as hamburger)
1/2 C unsweetened applesauce
1 C warm water

Directions. . .
Preheat oven to 350.  Combine all ingredients and mix well to make sure all the dry ingredients are moist and the meat is coated with the flour mixture. If the mixture is too dry add a little more warm water - a little at a time.  The dough should be a little sticky; say - the consistency of dropped biscuit dough.

Drop by rounded teaspoon onto greased cookie sheets
Bake for 10-15 mins until bottoms are golden brown
Remove from oven, let cool thoroughly and store in airtight container in 'fridge.

FOR CRUNCHIER TREATS (We like 'em crunchier for Rose & Gracie b/c they last longer). When all the biscuits have been baked, remove from the oven and let them sit a bit (5 mins is enough).
Turn off the oven and put them all back on a cookie sheet & return to oven.  Let them sit in the cooling oven for several hours or over- night to harden. VOY-OLA!!!  Fabulous wheat-free doggie treats.

      YUMMY MICROWAVE
  OATMEAL BALL TREATS

(Source: These cookies are small and round; very hard and crunchy,  and make super training treats if you make them really small.  (If you DO make them super small, reduce the cooking time in the microwave.)
Ultimate Dog Treat Cookbook
by Liz Palika)

The treats should be firm (but not super hard) and dry when you take them out of the microwave, but NOT scorched.  They'll harden as they cool.
            DOGS LOVE 'EM!

  Peanut Butter Yummies
      Source: ChefTodd Mohr

4 C Oats
(instant)
4 C Flour (whole wheat's best)
28 oz Peanut Butter
    (either smooth or crunchy)
1 C Water - roughly -
Mix it all up with your hands & press onto cookie sheet. (Cut into bite-size pieces BEFORE you bake - otherwise you'll need a chain saw. Ha!) A pizza cutter works great for cutting up before baking, or use a cookie cutter for pet treats

Bake 300 for 1 to 1.5 hrs so
      they get ROCK solid.

         EASY 'N QUICK
    DOGGIE DELIGHTS
Source:  My friend Millie Jean who is over-the-moon nuts about dogs.  I know the feeling...
If you don’t have a lot of time but still want to treat your 4-legged baby to some homemade goodness, this will fill the bill perfectly! Prepare yourself for lots of sweet wet kisses!!

Ingredients. . .
2 C whole-wheat flour
2/3 C chicken or beef broth
1 large egg
3 tbsp quick cooking oats

Directions. . .
1. Crack the egg into a mixing
    bowl and beat lightly.
2. Stir or whisk in the chicken
   or beef broth.
3. Stir in the whole-wheat flour.
4. Mix in the oats.
5. Form the mixture into a ball.
(You can either roll out the
   dough or dip spoonfuls onto
    a microwave safe plate.)
6. Microwave in batches* for 5 minutes on high. Add more time as necessary, depending on how powerful your microwave is.
 * The reason for the batches is that you don’t want the biscuits to stick together, so leave some space between them on the plate that you're using for micro-waving. Cool and serve.
          Mmmm!  Woof!

HERE IS A TERRIFIC,
SHORT ARTICLE about homemade dog treats and what to avoid.  The information might surprise you!  It did me . . .

      SUPER EASY
  HOT DOG CHEWIES
      (no wheat!)

These treats are 100% hot dogs with nothing added. What makes them special is that they're cooked in the microwave long enough to make them tough and chewy.  Dogs love these!
Hot dogs are high in nitrate and sodium, so they aren't meant to be given to your dog daily.  Save these for special times. But oh boy, dogs are just wack-o for these and they make terrific training and/or reward treats that are super easy to make.

Directions. . .
Cut hot dogs into nickel-sized "coins" about 1/4" thick.  Put them in a single layer on several paper towels and Microwave at 50% power for 5 MINUTES.
Remove from microwave and let them cool. (They get firmer as they cool).  Store on a paper towel in an airtight container in the 'fridge.

SARDINE SURPRISE
A great and healthy treat for your special kitty
but this one is NOT for human consumption.
I know; so disappointing. . .
Source: Simply Pets.Com (great site!)

Ingredients. . .
2 flat cans of sardines in oil (do not drain)
2/3 C cooked rice
2 Tbsp pureed fresh raw liver (or canned liver cat food)
1/4 C parsley, chopped fine
Directions. . .
Combine all ingredients and mix well. Shape into balls of desired size or simply spoon into cat's dish and serve. These treats may be stored in the refrigerator for up to three days, and they work GREAT frozen.  Make a big batch and put individual "fishballs" in freezer zip lock bags.  Cats absolutely go nuts over these!

If you have problems with your cat peeing, marking or showing other signs of stress/aggression, take a look at this neat product. . .

"Folks, listen, I have the queen feline of peeing on things that cost over $100.00. My cat Lucy has been with me her whole life (she is 6 this year), but when she was a kitty my roommate had a cat that peed on anything you left on the floor.  Lucy picked up the habit.  Boxes, towels, jackets, ANY kind of carpet and throw rugs- forget about it.  If it was on the floor and she wanted to make it hers, it was ruined.  It stunk forever; cat pee is not an easy thing to get rid of..."
"My only regret with the FELIWAY DIFFUSER product was not finding out about it sooner. I've been using it for a month now with MIRACULOUS results.  Lucy was a feral cat, so her social skills were far from polished but this product has helped a LOT.  Also - she used to bite and hiss at company and that has been vastly improved with this FELIWAY product as well. She seems calmer. . .
Now I purchase the 6 pack of refills and the spray."
